As a people, we believe that we do our best work when we work together for the common good. This is a core liberal belief, a belief that is enshrined in the first words of the Constitution that created us as a nation.
In these past four years, our promise to form a more perfect union and to promote the general welfare has been tested.
Once again, we will keep that promise.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic was a difficult time, for some more than others, but no one had a good time of it this past year. COVID-19 disrupted our homes, our jobs, our play, our money.
We will get through this . . . together!
Together, we found new ways to connect to each other. We were led in this by the old who have the wisdom of experience and the young who have the confidence to push forward and the skill to make it work. The world around us continues to move, but together, we are finding our footing.
We formed the Liberal Leadership League with a vision - that our liberal values will find a voice in everyday conversation among the people. Today, as we are moving through this turbulence, we hear voices echoing our liberal values:
We must have empathy for each other and offer economic, food, and health security to those affected by the crisis.
We are responsible for each other. We make it work when we work together. We are a community, giving a helping hand to all who need a hand. It doesn't matter where you come from or what's in your wallet. We know that anyone we help today may provide the help we need tomorrow.
Now more than ever we see the importance of the common good. The private depends on the public. Only good government will guide us through this crisis.
Paul Wellstone said it best: ‘We all do better when we all do better.’
As we hope for the end of the pandemic and the return of a functional government, we still have work to do to get our message out to the public.
We are still dedicated to our work, now more than ever.
